John liked saying “yes” to others. He thought it was a lovely word.

One day, during lunchtime at school, John’s friend Chorro asked John to give him his lunch. Chorro

seemed to forget his lunch every day, but he never cared. He knew John would only say yes. Sure

enough, John gave his lunch to Chorro, although he was very hungry.

The next morning, the teacher asked everyone to hand in their homework. Chorro didn’t do his. He

wasn’t worried at all, because he had a good friend. “John, give me yours!” said Chorro.

John didn’t want to do that. If he did so, he would have nothing to hand in. But John liked to say

yes. Finally, Chorro happily handed “his” homework to the teacher.

The teacher asked John, “Where is your homework, John?”

John didn’t want to lie. “I gave it to Chorro,” he replied.

“What?” The teacher’s eyes were wide open. The answer was not what she had expected. But she

wasn’t angry. Instead, she asked patiently, “Why did you give your homework to Chorro?”

“Because he would be punished without my homework. I’m a kind person. If someone needs my

help, I should say yes!” said John.

The teacher smiled and said, “It’s good to be kind, but you must be kind to yourself first and only

say yes to things you’re happy to do. I hope you can understand this.”

2024 is the Year of the Dragon on the Chinese lunar calendar. Or should that be the Year of the

Loong? The question has been argued a lot in China, as some say the two creatures are different in

Chinese and Western cultures.

The Chinese dragon is a mythical (神話的) creature that can fly and has the magical power to

control wind and rain. It’s typically seen as a symbol of power, excellence and good luck and often

described as a wise and kind creature. However, the dragon in the Western world is often described as an

evil (邪惡的), fire-breathing creature that collects treasure and causes fear among people. It’s usually a

symbol of darkness.

According to written records, the Chinese dragon was first translated (翻譯) as “dragon” in The

Travels of Marco Polo in 1299. Since it is similar to the Western dragon in some ways — both are huge,

for example — “dragon” might be the best word to describe the creature at that time. But it’s far from

being able to show all the meanings that the creature bears in Chinese culture.

In recent years, people have come up with a better translation. The word “l(fā)oong” is similar to the

pinyin for the Chinese character “龍” and it is easy for Westerners to pronounce.

No matter which way it is translated, we must note that the Chinese dragon is a warm and joyful

image (形象). It’s very different from the Western dragon. We should always try to explain it clearly so

that Westerners won’t get lost in the translation.

9. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A. Mythical creatures in different cultures.

B. The ways to translate the Chinese dragon.

C. The history of the Chinese dragon.

D. The differences between the dragon and loong.

10. The underlined word “bears” has the closest meaning to “ ”.

A. carries B. searches

C. needs D. understands

11. What does the writer think is important?

A. Using “l(fā)oong” instead of “dragon”.

B. Learning about cultural differences.

C. Helping Westerners correctly understand loong.

D. Knowing the cultural values in Chinese symbols.

12. Which can be the best title for the passage?

A. The power of the Chinese dragon

B. Changing the way Westerners see dragons

C. Why is loong important in Chinese culture?

D. Is it the Year of the Dragon or the Loong?

D

① You probably already know that how you eat before bed affects (影響) your

sleep. But do you know that your daily eating choices may also affect your sleep?

Now, more and more research shows that dietary (飲食的) patterns can affect sleep

quality (質(zhì)量) and the unhealthy ones may lead to sleep problems.

② In the US, a large percentage of the population has poor sleep quality and

sleep problems. At the same time, most Americans eat far too much fatty and processed food and too few

fruits and vegetables. Although it’s difficult to find out whether these two facts are causally (有因果關(guān)系

地) connected to each other, more and more research points to the relationships between sleep and diet.

③ Erica Jansen and her group wanted to get a deeper understanding of the possible relationship

between sleep and diet in Americans who are 18 and older, so they studied whether people who stick to

the government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans get more hours of sleep. Using information from

surveys collected from 2011 to 2016, they found people who didn’t follow the advice such as eating

enough fruits and vegetables had shorter sleep periods.

④ Besides, in a separate study, they followed more than 1,000 young adults aged 21 to 30. These

adults took part in a web-based dietary study made to help them increase their daily servings of fruits

and vegetables. They found those who ate more fruits and vegetables over a three-month period reported

better sleep quality.

⑤ Research carried out outside the US also shows that healthier dietary patterns are connected with

better sleep quality and fewer sleep problems. These include the Mediterranean diet — a diet rich in

plant foods, olive oil and seafood, and low in red meat and added sugar.

⑥ However, there is not one magic food or drink that will improve your sleep. It’s better to pay

attention to healthy dietary patterns during the day.

13. The writer leads us to the topic by .

A. comparing facts B. raising a question

C. describing problems D. giving an example

14. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

A. Most Americans eat unhealthily.

B. Sleep and diet are causally connected.

C. Many Americans eat at the wrong time.

D. Many Americans are changing their diet.

15. How does the writer feel about the Mediterranean diet?

A. It is hard to follow. B. It is meaningless.

C. It is healthy. D. It is popular.

第二節(jié) 閱讀短文,從方框內(nèi)所給的選項(xiàng)中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng),其中有一個(gè)多余的

選項(xiàng)。

Whether you’re going on holiday, a school trip or to see your friends or family at the weekend, there

is one thing you can’t avoid—packing (收拾行李). Many people pack too much, which may mean heavy

bags and paying more luggage fees (行李費(fèi)). Here are a few suggestions on how to pack light.

17

It’s best to pack at least a day before the start of your trip. If you pack just a few hours before

leaving, you’ll probably quickly fill your luggage with things you don’t need.

Write down your packing list.

This can be the most important thing. Think about what you really need to take. Make a list, and

then see if you can make it shorter. 18

Forget the “just in case (萬一)” things.

Unless you go to a place that doesn’t have any shops, you won’t need to take too many “just in case”

things. If you find you really need something else, you may get a good deal in the local market.

Wear what you can.

If you have big or heavy shoes, wear them on the journey, along with big jackets that will waste

space in your suitcase. 19 You won’t regret wearing them.

Be ready to do some washing.

This isn’t the most exciting suggestion. 20 You don’t need to take too many clothes. Most hotels

offer clothes-washing services or you can even wash your clothes by hand in the hotel bathroom if you

run out of clothes to wear.

A. Don’t pack in a rush.

B. However, it can save you space.

C. Airports and planes are usually so cold.

D. Making a list can also make packing quicker.

E. Make sure you don’t forget important things.

In November, 2023, a fashion show was held at New York

University Shanghai (NYU Shanghai), and 24 sets of clothes 31 (show).

It’s worth mentioning that all of them were made from what most people

would call “trash (廢物)”.

Both Wang Kaidi and Yang Huiyi are first-year students at the

university. They used the trash found by the seaside to make a dress. And it was praised (贊揚(yáng)) by lots

of people at the show. Yang explained 32 (they) idea came from a beach cleanup event in Shanghai.

When they saw the shores (岸) were covered with plastic bits, they realised how much harm people had

done to the environment. “We made up our mind to design (設(shè)計(jì)) a dress 33 could remind people of

the beauty of the ocean,” Wang said.

34 (actual), it was not the first time that the university had held the Trash Fashion Show. Since

2017, the event 35 (take) place yearly. It provides students 36 a chance to show their creativity.

More importantly, it has made them think about the bad influence of waste and encouraged them 37

(change) their lifestyle. Yang said, “Humans make 38 (ton) of waste every day. But in 39 dress

we made, every recycled piece is like a small effort to help take care of the environment.”

In the end, we have to say when people talk about events like the Trash Fashion Show, it’s a good

beginning. It means that more and more people realise the importance of protecting the environment.

Let’s work together to make the environment much 40 (good).

Women played an important role in history worldwide. Most were buried (埋藏) with their unknown

talents and amazing stories. Yet there are still lucky ones whose stories have been recorded. Here are

three ancient Chinese women who were successful in their time, and still influence us in our time.

Li Qingzhao

Praised as the “No.1 talented woman” in Chinese history, Li was a poet from the Song Dynasty.

She was well-known for her poems, which were divided into two styles. Before her husband’s death, her

poems were about a relaxing and happy life. After he died, her poems were full of sadness.

She also wrote high-spirited poems praising war heroes. One of her most famous poem lines is “Born

as an outstanding soul, even die as a hero among spirits”.

Ban Zhao

Ban, born in the Eastern Han Dynasty, was the first female (女性的) historian in China. She was

also good at writing poems, but only a few of her works have been kept.

At the age of 40, Ban finished Han Shu, China’s first dynastic history book, based on her brother’s

writings. A total of four people wrote the book, and Ban, as the last writer, kept the style of the first

three.

Xue Tao

At one time in China, when Xue Tao’s name was mentioned, people would think of her famous “Xue

Tao Jian”, a kind of small-size colourful writing paper.

It’s recorded that Xue, who lived in the Tang Dynasty, created such coloured paper to write poems

on. During her time, writing paper was often yellow, yet Xue changed the old simple colour into different

shades (色度) of red or green.

Xue was good at writing poems and music, and developed friendships with many well-known poets,

including Bai Juyi, Liu Yuxi and Du Mu. Her poems not only pointed to private female feelings, but also

showed her care about soldiers on the frontier and other social problems.

41. What were Li Qingzhao’s poems about when her husband was alive?

42. How did Xue Tao create “Xue Tao Jian”?

43. What do the three ancient Chinese women have in common (有……共同點(diǎn))?

44. Which woman in your life influences you most? Why? (Write 30 words or more.)
