I am both delighted and deeply honored to have been invited to write the introduction to the new

issue of The Slovenia Quarterly, and to invite its readers to discover the world of remarkable journeys

of Slovenes in China and Chinese in Slovenia. Many of them have been bridging two cultures in the

past and numerous foster mutual understanding between two nations in the present. In an increasingly interconnected

world, the stories of individuals who transcend borders and cultures serve as a testament to the power of human curiosity

and unity. Three of such luminaries, Ferdinand Avgu?tin Hallerstein, Alma Karlin, and Huiqin Wang, have left an

indelible mark on the stories of bringing together two distant countries and two distinct cultures.

Hallerstein, a Jesuit missionary with the Chinese name Liu Songling, was among the first Slovenes to venture to

China in the 18th century. His pioneering work in astronomy and cartography contributed to bridging the gap between

the East and the West. Alma Karlin, an intrepid globetrotter from Slovenia, embarked on a journey in the early 20th

century that took her to China. The unique perspective on Chinese culture and society is documented in her writings that

continue to inspire those who share her passion for cultural exploration and cross-cultural understanding. One of them

is Huiqin Wang, a Chinese artist, brought her rich cultural heritage to Slovenia, where she has contributed to the cultural

landscape and, among others, played a vital role in presenting the works and legacies of Hallerstein and Alma Karlin to a

broader audience. The stories of all three remind us of humanity's thirst for knowledge and cultural exchange knows no

bounds.

I wish this issue of The Slovenia Quarterly a safe and enlightening journey to readers in China, Slovenia and

worldwide. Besides, may the Slovenian Studies Center, where the journal dwells, continue the exciting and successful

work in strengthening the enduring bonds between nations.

Ferdinand Avgu?tin Hellerstein, also known

as Liu Songling in Chinese, was one of the most

renowned messengers of cultural exchange between

China and Slovenia. Born on August 27, 1703, in

a noble family in Ljubljana, he owned the Ravbar

Castle in Menges. His father was a senior official

in the Carniolan authorities, and his mother was

a baroness. During his novitiate, he had written a

request to be sent as a missionary and expressed his

strong desire to go to China. On October 8, 1727,

he made another request to undertake a mission

to China in Vienna. Liu Songling's wish was not

fulfilled until 1735 when he traveled to Genoa and

then to Lisbon, where he studied Portuguese and

deepened his knowledge of astronomy. On April

25, 1736, Liu Songling embarked on a journey with

other missionaries. After a difficult journey through

Africa and several intermediate stops, he arrived in

Macau, a Portuguese colony at that time, in early

September, 1738. He studied Chinese, enhanced his

mathematical knowledge there, and at the request of

municipal authorities, created maps of Macau and its

surrounding areas for the chief governor of Goa. On

March 1, 1739, he traveled to Guangzhou with two

other missionaries, stayed there for a month (March

4 to April 4) before continuing his journey by boat

and horse, and eventually arrived in Beijing on June

13. At that time, it was the third year of Emperor

Qianlong's reign. Due to their extensive knowledge in

astronomy, mathematics, and other fields, Qianlong

In the Qintianjian, Liu Songling was responsible

for astronomical observations, calendar formulation,

and other related astronomical work. In ancient

China, astronomy and celestial phenomena held a

significant position because they involved the most

sensitive areas of Chinese life, from calculating

agricultural cycles and religious ceremonies to

predicting the future through astrology. Every year,

the emperor would confirm the calendar. Like other

Jesuit astronomers before him, Liu Songling was

a supporter of the Ptolemaic geocentric model and

opposed Copernican heliocentrism. This aligns

with the traditional Chinese cosmology, which

fundamentally viewed the Earth as the center, albeit in

the form of quadrilateral plane. On the other hand, the

Chinese concept of the universe was more accurate

as it did not envision the universe as a solid crystal

sphere like the Jesuits but predicted celestial bodies

moving in empty space. Additionally, the Jesuit

contributions to Chinese astronomy included reliable

methods for predicting solar eclipses, geometric

explanations of planetary motion, understanding

of the Earth's spherical surface and the concept of

latitude and longitude, the introduction of European

algebra, knowledge of astronomical instruments, and

new methods of celestial observation.

During this period, Liu Songling also made maps

of the Qing Dynasty, established income registers for

19 provinces, and used them to calculate and publish

the most precise estimate of the Chinese population

at that time (1761), which was 198,214,553 people.

Liu Songling improved the calendar and determined

culture, philosophy, and beliefs. Due to his high

reputation and excellent knowledge of both Chinese

and Portuguese, Liu Songling was also a successful

diplomat and representative in court negotiations.

In 1761, when the rulers of China intended to

send Liu Songling to map new territories beyond

the Great Wall, he declined due to health reasons.

However, the emperor still wished for him to continue

his work to the best of his abilities. On July 29, 1774,

Liu Songling suffered a stroke and became extremely

weak. On October 29, Liu Songling died of a second

stroke and was buried in the Jesuit Cemetery in

Beijing.

Liu Songling collaborated with Ignaz K?gler,

Karl Slaví?ek, and Andrés Pereyra to complete his

major work Observationes astronomicae ab Anno

1717 ad Annum 1752 a Patribus Societatis Jesu Pekini

Sinarum factae. The book covers the positional data of

planets from 1717 to 1752. Liu Songling, along with

his collaborators K?gler, Anton Gogeisl, and Felix da

Rocha, published a 35-volume astronomical reference

book called Yixiang Kaocheng. Additionally, Liu

Songling also worked on calculating and refining the

Chinese lunar calendar and published many other

astronomical articles in Vienna, St. Petersburg, Paris,

and London. Liu Songling is an important figure for

China as he introduced many of the latest scientific

and technological achievements from Europe to the

Qing Dynasty.

Liu Songling's documents are preserved in

archives in various countries and regions, including

the National Archives of the People's Republic of

China, the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia, and

The Magnes Collection (a museum at the University

of California, Berkeley). On January 12, 1999, an

astronomer from the ?rni Vrh Observatory discovered

an asteroid, which was later named Liusongling and

assigned the number 15071. Some of the astronomical

instruments that Liu Songling was involved in

the design and production are now in Ancient

Observatory in Beijing. As an astronomer, Liu

Songling witnessed and promoted cultural exchanges

him an important ambassador for Sino-Slovenian

cultural envoy and bridge for friendly exchanges

between the two countries. This exhibition is

another important achievement in the cooperation

between China and Slovenia in the archival field,

and it is believed to help enrich the connotation

of friendly cooperation between the two countries

and enhance mutual understanding between their

peoples. Cvelfar reviewed the history of friendly

cooperation between the archival departments of the

two countries and expressed gratitude to the National

Archives Administration of China for providing

valuable archival replicas for the exhibition, all the

individuals and institutions who have contributed to

the exhibition. As a symbol of cooperation between

China and Slovenia in the fields of science, culture,

and archives, a 1:1 replica of the Ji Heng Fuchen

Instrument, produced under the supervision of Liu

Songling, would soon be erected in Liu Songling's

hometown, adjacent to the Archives of the Republic

of Slovenia.

The exhibition is divided into two parts: indoor

and outdoor. The indoor section mainly displays

eight precious original archival documents related

to Liu Songling, such as his birth registration and

letters he sent to his relatives in China, as well as

replica copies of archival documents related to Liu

Songling preserved in the First Historical Archives

of China. The outdoor section consists of some largescale artworks related to significant events in Liu

Songling's life. The exhibition would continue until

the end of June.

World traveller and writer, Slovenian Alma

M. Karlin has been recorded in the history of

Sino-Slovenian cultural exchanges because of her

important connections with China.

Born on 12 October 1889 in Celje, Slovenia,

Karlin came into the world with a mild disability,

injuries to her legs and a half-closed left eye. She had

difficulty in walking as a child and spent most of her

time at home. In 1908 she and her mother embarked

on a journey through Europe. They travelled to

northern Italy, Switzerland, Paris, London, Brussels

and Germany. After returning home, Alma started

teaching English and French in Celle. During this

time, she also taught English to Xu Xingjun, the son

of a Chinese official. Alma accepted the proposal

from Xu Xingjun and they then travelled to Celie

to visit Alma's mother over Christmas in 1913,

but she was not satisfied with this marriage.

Therefore Alma gave up the idea of marriage and

returned to London.

After the First World War, China become one

of the most important destinations in Alma Karin's

global tour. She visited the north-east of China,

Shanghai, some coastal port cities and Beijing from

1923 to 1924. In Beijing she became secretary to

Erich von Salzmann, a journalist for the famous

German newspaper Berliner Morgenpost, the Cologne

Times and other magazines, who knew the Asian

countries like the back of his hand, and this sparked

Alma's interest in engaging in large-scale journalism

work.

floods.

Heavy rains caused rivers to rise rapidly, the

Sava, Drava, and Mur rivers burst their banks, several

lakes overflow, numerous houses and fields were

destroyed, many roads and railways were flooded and

many bridges collapsed. Floods and landslides have

led to the inundation of large areas in central and

northern Slovenia, and roads to villages have been cut

off. According to the meteorological department of

Slovenian, the amount of rainfall in the affected areas

was equivalent to one month's rainfall in the same

period in previous years.

In the wake of the floods, the EU quickly

activated emergency mechanism for disaster relief.

Germany assisted Slovenia with two prefabricated
