54 | Bonhams This splendid cabinet is an excellent example demonstrating the
classic aesthetics of Ming style furniture. It is distinguished by the
graceful proportion, exquisite craftsmanship and timeless elegance of
simplicity.
The present lot belongs to a specific type of cabinets, commonly
known as yuanjiaogui, or 'round-corner cabinets', in classical
Chinese furniture. They are characterised by the rounded protruding
top and usually splayed profile, exhibiting a simple yet tasteful
design, and embracing a sense of harmonious balance in the form.
Such design was widely applied in cabinet making throughout the
Ming and Qing dynasties. With the combination of aesthetics and
functionality, cabinets of this form have become a common and
crucial element in designing a pleasing and comfortable interior. For
further discussion on the variation of round-corner cabinets, see
Wang Shixiang, Mingshi Jiaju Yanjiu (A Study of Ming Furniture),
Beijing, 2007, pp.177-184.
Compare a huanghuali round-corner cabinet of smaller size (130.5cm
high) and set with a central stile, dated to the Ming dynasty, illustrated
by Wang Shixiang, Mingshi Jiaju zhenshang (The Appreciation of
Ming Furniture), Hong Kong, 2012, p.212, pl. 141. The style of
the components, and proportion of the flat surfaces and rounded
elements are highly comparable to the present lot. For another related
cabinet, Late Ming dynasty, of similar size (184.2cm high) and with
a rare tiangualeng lobe-shaped moulded stiles, see Grace Wu, The

十七/十八世紀(jì) 黃花梨官帽椅
Displaying an extraordinary design yet balanced proportions, and
enhanced by the rich lustre of the huanghuali honey-coloured wood,
the present armchair demonstrated the timeless elegance of Ming
dynasty classic furniture and the precise craftsmanship.
Related examples however, can be found in Ming dynasty paintings
and woodblock prints. In a painting by Qiu Ying (c.1495-1552)
for example, Playing the Flute to Attract Phoenixes, in the Palace
Museum, Beijing, one can see a man sitting on a similar yokeback
armchair with horse-hoof feet. However, as the chair in the painting
is concealed by fabric, we cannot tell if it has a mat panel. An album
leaf, however, by Tang Yin (1470-1523), Landscapes and Figures,
in the Palace Museum, Taipei, shows a man seated on a 'drunken
lord's' armchair with a large mat panel beneath inset panels.
Such 'drunken lord's' armchairs, such as the one illustrated by
S.Handler, Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture, Berkley,
Los Angeles, London, 2001, p.70, has a back similar to those on the
present lot with woven-mat and cut-out panels.
The present lot is a pair to the preceding lot 324, for more discussion
please see lot 324.

The collecting and connoisseurship of extraordinary shaped rocks
in Chinese aesthetic culture boasts a history steeped in reverence
and admiration. From emperors to scholar-elite, these remarkable
formations have held sway over the imaginations of generations,
cherished for their dynamic forms reminiscent of the grandeur
of mountains or mythical dragons and animals. Among the tales
echoing through time, one stands out—the legendary account of
Mi Fu, the esteemed artist of the Song Dynasty. During one of his
wanderings, Mi Fu encountered a particularly captivating rock.
Moved by its inherent beauty and symbolic resonance, he bowed
before it, paying homage to its divine inspiration. His act of reverence
has since become enshrined in Chinese art history, a testament to
the profound connection between humanity and nature, where the
tangible and intangible converge in harmonious splendour, inspiring
contemplation and creativity for generations to come.

六朝 玉辟邪
Jade animals carved in the round were comparatively more common
in the Han dynasty than in previous periods and a great emphasis
was placed on the depiction of the animals in all their ferocity. Bixie
and other winged mythical beasts were widely adapted by the
craftsmen in their works, and such Han style was followed by the
later dynasties.
Portrayed with a dragon-like head and a lion's body flanked by pair
of large feathery wings, this powerful beast bixie was often placed
in tombs, either as tomb guardians to protect the deceased against
evil spirits, or as auspicious carvings and decoration. Such custom
was commonly found during the Qin and Han dynasties, which
flourished and reached its peak during the Six Dynasties. Compare

Incense burners were commonly used in daily life during the Han
dynasty. They were casted in various forms and some were produced
for ritual purpose, such as the boshan lu (hill censer) which were
influenced by the Daoism. Under the prevailing belief in immortality,
mythical animals were conceived as the important mediator in the
afterlife. Incense burner in such form were probably created to fulfil
the individual's spiritual needs.

of the Qing Court. During the tumultuous transition from the Qing
to the Republic period, the Prince's family was compelled to sell
the curios in their grand mansion to the renowned Japanese art
dealer Yamanaka Sadajiro (1866-1936), who operated art galleries
worldwide. The private treasures of the imperial family were then
revealed to the public and sold at a historic auction The Remarkable
Collection Of The Imperial Prince Kung Of China held by American
Art Galleries in New York in 1913.
According to the Ningshou Jiangu 寧壽鑑古 (Illustrated Catalogue
Of Ancient Bronze Vessels Of The Ningshougong Collection), vol.
12, there is a term 'fengwen li' (a bronze vessel li with phoenix
decoration) mentioned under the section of the Zhou dynasty
(fig.1) and introduce with illustration in later pages (fig.2). Further
documentation regarding the present lot, see a chapter dated to
29 September 1773, the 38th year of the Qianlong reign, in Huoji
Dang 活計(jì)檔 (Records of the Imperial Household), mentioned a piece
of 'Zhou fengwen li' was submitted by the eunuch Hu Shijie, together
with a wood stand and a wood cover decorated with a jade finial.
