This is an exciting moment!
For pupils in the UK and around the world the IGCSEs are the first big public exams-both exciting and daunting.Choosing the options is the first chance to choose one's own direction and focus more on interests and strengths. Many more doors will open with these choices thanclose,andfewchoicesareirreversible,butitisworththinkingthroughthenumberand typeofsubjectstochoose.
Alongside the course specifications naturally the level of English written and spoken will, and must, develop so this must also be an area of active study, with our support - the value of IGCSEs is (a) in showing a high level of competence in each subject; (b) in showing the disciplineneeded to studyfor an exam and developcritical thinking skillsto answer unseen questions;(c) a globally recognised qualification in English.
These courses in G9 & G10 are designed to be the best preparation for A levels in G1l & G12, which are further globally-recognised qualifications, 'the gold standard of preparation for top universities'.
Through our IGcSE programme of individualised pathways, we continue to deliver our unique holistic and rich cultural and character education that prepares our children for excellence in life and leadership.

The Benefits of Boarding at Harrow Hengqin
Harrow Hengqin is a dynamic boarding school, with a thriving community of students who live in our dedicated boarding houses.
Boarding offers numerous advantages, particularly for students studying for key exams. For IGCSE students in Grades 9 and 10, living in our boarding houses provides a structured environment that supports focused learning. With set study times and access to a variety of support systems, students are empowered to concentrate on their academic goals. After the school day ends, they can take advantage of school resources, including the library, specialised teaching areas and sports and music facilities, which enhance their learning, especially for subjects with practical components.
Ourboarding students benefit from being in an academicallyfocused environment, surrounded by peers whoare equally motivated toexcel. This collaborative atmosphere fosters academic growth and encourages students to strive for their best. Additionally, we offer extra academic support as part of our boarding programme, which is particularly beneficial for those preparing for challenging exams like the IGCSEs. Living away from home allows students to focus fully on their studies, free from the distractions of home life, leading to improved academic outcomes.
Boarding also helps students develop essential life skills such as independence and self-reliance. These skills are invaluable for success in higher education, as living away from home prepares students for the demands and challenges of university life.

This year we are very excited to offer our Harrow Hengqin students the choice of more IGCSEs and further qualifications to support their educational development and movement towards A Levels and ultimatelyuniversity.
Dependingon each student's passport, theywill be able to make selectionfromthe twoIGCSE pathways to begin in Grade 9: the Zhong Kao Pathway or the Cambridge Pathway.
Many of our students will have already begun their journey towards their pathway during Grade 8.

Block 1: Languages
All students completing the Cambridge Pathway will continue with their bilingual education and take two language IGCSEs - English and Chinese.
They must select one IGCSE as a First Language qualification and one as a Second Language qualification to achieve their Cambridge ICE Certificate.
Option 1 - First Language: English as a First Language OR Chinese as a First Language PLUS
Option 2 - Second Language: Chinese as a Second Language OR English as a Second Language
Option 1: First Language English or Chinese IGCSE English- First Language
Students will have the opportunity to develop their own writing style and opinions; build their confidence in reading, writing and speaking; learn to write in different forms: essay, report, review, interview, letter, email, article; understand how to analyse writer's language and word choices; build upon accuracy in spelling, punctuation and grammar. Analytical and extended writing skills will be developed throughout the course and provide a good basis for any A level study.
Assessment will take place through 2 components: reading and writing exam ( .60%) coursework of 3 pieces assessing reading and writing skills through response to reading, descriptive and narrative writing ( 40%)

IGCSE Chinese- First Language
Students will engage in reading various types of Chinese texts, encompassing novels, articles, reviews, and classical Chinese texts, aiming to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture. They will also focus on acquiring the skills to write different genres of texts, including narrative, expository, and argumentative essays, with precision and effectiveness. Furthermore, the curriculum emphasises the development of metacognitive skills, such as analysis, synthesis, and inference, nurturingcritical thinkingabilities.

During G9 there will be a heavy focus on developing spelling, grammar and punctuation for accuracy. Some students at the end of Grade 9 may be suitable for CompletingtheIGcsEEnglish asanAdditional Language.
In Grade 10 students will begin to study for the IGCSE English as a Second Language which is widely recognised by universities as a demonstration of a student's English skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Students will have the opportunity to look at range of different texts from around the world including short stories, novels, poetry and plays. They will be encouraged to develop a contextual understanding of the writers and demonstrate their own personal opinions and understanding as well as empathy for characters.Analytical writing skills will be developed throughout the course and provide a good basis forA level study.

IGCSE Economics
Students will be taught how to use basic economic numeracy and interpret economic data, they will understand economic terminology, concepts and theories and use the tools of economic analysis to expresseconomicideas

We expect this to be a popular block amongst our students. When making choices on IGCSE science subjects then students should carefully consider their English language acquisition as all papers will be in English and lessons taught in English. MostscienceIGCSEswillrequire a GSEscore ofatleast50.
We will also be offering an EAL Science option where students can have additional support for IGCSE Combined Science on the Cambridge Pathway.
This is recommended for students that would like to take a comprehensive approach towards their science studies at IGCSE level. The students will learn about a variety of scientific ideas including characteristics and classification of living organisms; cell structure, enzymes, and biological molecules; reproduction, variation, and natural selection; diseases and immunity; environmental issues and human impact; biotechnologyandgeneticmodification

IGCSE Chemistry

Introduction to IGCSEs for Zhong Kao students
At Harrow Hengqin, our bilingual approach to teaching and learning allows our students to have the best of both worlds in taking IGCSEs and the Zhong Kao in the next stage of their education.
This year we have introduced a unique pathway that will allow our students to access a variety of IGCSEs - taught and examined through the English Medium - alongside their continued study of the Chinese National Curriculum (CNC) and the Zhong Kao attheendofG9.

IGCSE English as a Second Language
During G9 the focus for language study will be for success in the Zhong Gao examinations with additional support from the EAL department for other English Medium Examination subjects that have been selected for IGCSE. There will be a heavy focus on developing spelling, grammar and punctuation for accuracy. Some students at the end of Grade 9 may be suitable for completing the IGcsE English as anAdditional LanguagealongsidetheirZhongKaoexaminations.
In Grade 10 students willbegin to study for the IGCSE English as a Second Language which is widely recognised by universities as a demonstration of a student's English skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Students will learn how to write in a number of different forms including letters, emails, articles, reviews, reports and essays and understand the importance of defining different audiences in their writing. Reading skills will be extended through comprehension as well as skimming and scanning ideas for inference.

Sciences Block
The sciences - Physics and Chemistry - are a large part of the Zhong Kao pathway and final examination. All Zhong Kao students will be taught the Zhong Kao elements of the sciences in Chinese in separate classes during G9.

The EAL support programmes that have been developed specifically for our bilingual students at Harrow Hengqin offers support for almost all of the IGCSEs that we have On offer.
EAL Science
Students may already have experienced EAL Science support in their English lessons during Grade 8. These lessons provide pre-teaching of key vocabulary and concepts so encourage students' confidence in science lessons being taught in English.
Specific support for IGCSE Combined Science will be offered as an option alongside other IGCSE options and Zhong Kao teaching.
IGCSE English as an Additional Language
All students that have completed Zhong Kao will be taught IGCSE English as a Second Language in Grade 10. Some students may take IGCSE English as an Additional Language as an alternative in the final Grade 10 examinations, to ensure that they are able to achieve an IGCSE in English.

During Grade 10 some of our students may need additional support with their IGCSE examinations that are taught and examined in English.
These subject specific EAL lessons offer additional support through pre-teaching and revising specific areas of the subject's curriculum for vocabulary, concepts and context to ensure that every student can achieve their potential.
