FROM THE COLLECTION OF LOTS 68-110 Masaaki ‘Gas’ Kimishima 君島 正晃 (d.2020) was born in Japan and later moved to the UK, where he lived for nearly thirty years. After various careers including working as a fashion designer and art dealer, he started making pottery following a meeting with ceramicist and magazine editor Murray Fieldhouse (1925-2018). His encounter with master potter Michio Furutani (1946-2000) in Shigaraki in 1992 also had a deep effect on his art, and he then decided to specialise in the ancient techniques and kilns of Japan. Gas became a respected wood-fire potter, establishing his studio in England and building several anagama (cave) kilns in Tring, Hertfordshire. Throughout his career, he took part in many events including the International Ceramics Festival in Aberystwyth (July 2015), for which he built a small anagama kiln, which he named ‘Draig Oriog’ (The Moody Dragon). His collection was purchased over the years in Japan and reflects his interest for blue and white porcelain and Japanese studio pottery.
